Chapter 29
Though they survived the dinner, Sydney and Michael decided it was best if they didn’t make their family get-together a frequent occasion. Christmas and Easter were plenty of family bonding time, or rather plenty of time to keep Michael’s mother and Sydney’s father from giving each other a verbal beating.

The two and a half months leading up to their wedding, passed quickly. After investigating the offer to the fullest extent, Michael decided to sell his business. Not only had he realized that the amount of money was too much to give up, but as much as he loved his store, and he did, his new life didn’t leave him nearly enough time to dedicate to the business. His new life was Sydney, she was everything; all of it. In addition to her trip to France, Michael accompanied Sydney almost everywhere, including the mini-trips of her own around the United States.

After the completion of his business sale, Michael had begun to work on his ‘platform’ of Adolescent Obesity. Sydney had gathered up some assistants and experts in the field for him to work with on the ideas he had. Though he was nervous at first, especially since he had never done anything remotely like that before, he quickly grew to love it. He started out slow, speaking with peewee hockey clubs and soccer teams, telling them how good it was that they were getting up off the sofa and exercising. Then, he began to formulate a nationwide challenge for elementary and middle school children when they went back to school that fall. His challenge for them was to try a sport, any sport, during that school year. They didn’t have to stick with it if they found that they hated it and liked something else better, but they needed to try. Much to the great joy and surprise of both Michael and Sydney, his plan was well accepted and seemed to be a success.

On the fifteenth of September, Sydney and Michael were able to have the quiet wedding they had wanted. Sydney wore a simple white dress and Michael wore a black suit. They had a judge come to the White House to perform the ceremony. Their parents (and Abby) were the only attendees. The next day, the nation was quite shocked that their president had been married so surreptitiously, but Michael and Sydney couldn’t have cared less. They were blissfully happy to be finally married.

For the next few months, they continued with their regular routine, clouded in their blissful newlywed haze. They managed to make it through a family Thanksgiving without a major brawl as well, which made them happier.

Very late on Christmas Eve, Sydney and Michael flew out of DC bound for the Middle East to give a surprise visit to the troops serving there. Sydney wasn’t thrilled about the idea of returning to the Middle East, even if she was only going to be there a few hours under very strict protection, which was why Michael was coming along. That and he didn’t want to be apart from her on Christmas.

After making good use of the bed on the plane, Sydney was in the bathroom brushing her teeth so she could get some sleep on their very long flight when Michael, who was trying to get some sleep, heard her screech.

“Whatsmatta?” he mumbled.

“What day is it?!” she asked frantically.

“That’s a joke right?” he laughed. “Umm, December 25th in about two hours east coast time,” he told her as he glanced at his watch.”

She burst out of the bathroom looking slightly pale. “I think I’m pregnant.”

“WHAT?!” Michael gasped as he sat upright in bed so fast he bashed his head on the shelf above the bed. “DAMN IT!”

“Oohh, are you ok?” Sydney asked with concern.

“Yeah.... wait WHAT? Pregnant?” he repeated with confusion. They had discussed it before getting married and decided that since Sydney would be over forty by the time her four year run as president would be over, children would not be part of their future. Though Michael was slightly disappointed, he had given up on the dream of children long ago, so it wasn’t a surprise to him.

She nodded slowly as she approached the bed, still looking pale.

“Okay, so um... how do we feel about this?” he asked cautiously, not being entirely sure himself.

“I don’t know!” she screeched.

“Okay um... breathe, Syd.”

“I AM BREATHING!” she yelled. Michael slid further away from her on the bed. “Sorry...”

“It’s ok,” he sighs. “Well... how late are you?”

“Like two weeks,” she whimpered. “That’s SO not normal!”

“It could be stress,” he suggested.

“Yeah... but what if I’m pregnant?!” she asked.

“I don’t know...,” he sighed. Deep down he wanted her to be, but not if she didn’t want to be. Sydney began to pace the tiny space between the bed and the wall of the airplane with both her hands on her lower belly.

“Okay... okay... okay,” she repeated the word over and over. “I’m thinking... I’m thinking it's good!” she said in a frazzled manner that didn’t exactly indicate ‘good.’ “But I’m not sure!”

“Okay...,” Michael said unsurely.

“I mean... it’s a baby! A BABY!! Your baby..... I want to have your baby.” She smiled at him.

“Really?” he asked, his heart fluttering slightly with excitement.

“Yeah,” Sydney said with a soft giggle as she knelt down on the bed beside him. “I mean ... I know it’s totally the wrong time and... well, I know we talked about it, but it happened so... let’s just go with it!” She laughed.

Michael cupped her face in his hands and kissed her passionately. “I love you so, so much.”

“Yeah?” she laughed. “You’re happy about this?”

“ARE YOU KIDDING?! I’ve always wanted kids.” He smiled.

Sydney sighed and lay back on the bed with him. “Oh no... what if I’m not pregnant now?” she said sadly. “I mean.... I know how I said I never wanted kids... but now I want it,” she said quietly as she covered her belly protectively.

Michael smiled at her as he combed through her hair with one hand and rested the other on top of her belly. “Why don’t we worry about it tomorrow? We really need to get some sleep.”

“You’re right,” she sighed as she leaned her head against his arm and tried to fall asleep.
