Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Along with the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens there additional movies coming in the Star Wars universe that will be stand-alone stories. The first of them has been formally announced as Star Wars: Rogue One and, surprisingly, it will take place back in the original Star Wars trilogy timeline!

Gareth Edwards, who directed the Godzilla reboot, is directing SW: Rogue One with an expected release date of December 16, 2016.

Little details about Rogue One have released so far other than that it will depict a Rebel Alliance raid to steal the original Death Star plans. In the original Star Wars (new known as Star Wars IV: A New Hope) Princess Leia uses R2-D2 to get the stolen plans to the rebels and is what sets up the infamous opening scene of a Star Destroyer looming over Leia's ship. Luke Skywalker then goes on to boast how he can hit a womp rat with a T-16 so hitting the exhaust port in the Death Star trench shouldn't be a problem.

Some type of cross-over is to be expected with either the current Star Wars: Rebels animated series and/or the other stand-alone movies. With the timeline in mind, don't expect too many epic Jedi/Sith battles as the Jedi are mostly wiped out and the few remaining are in hiding.

The first official teaser/trailer has been released along with the official name, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
