Second Chance (Fox)

Second Chance is a new sci-fi series on Fox that officially premiered on January 13, 2016.

A thrilling new action-drama about a man brought back to life by two scientists playing god in the quest to save one of their own lives. Seventy-five-year-old JIMMY PRITCHARD (guest star Philip Baker Hall, “Modern Family,” “Magnolia”) is a shell of his former self. A drinker, a womanizer and a father who always put work before family, Pritchard was forced to resign as L.A. County Sheriff for corrupt conduct more than a decade ago. Now, some 15 unkind years later, he is killed when he stumbles upon a robbery at the home of FBI Agent DUVAL PRITCHARD (Tim DeKay, “White Collar”), one of his two children. But death is surprisingly short for Jimmy, who is brought back to life by billionaire tech-genius twins MARY GOODWIN (Dilshad Vadsaria, “Revenge”) and her brother, OTTO (Adhir Kalyan, “Rules of Engagement”), founders of the social networking empire, Lookinglass. Resurrected as a younger, better version of himself, with physical abilities of which he never dreamed, a re-animated Pritchard (Rob Kazinsky, “True Blood”) is given a second chance at life. What will he do with it? Will he try to repair the damage he did to his family? Will he embrace a new sense of purpose or fall prey to old temptations?
The show has gone through a few name changes. Originally named The Frankenstein Code it was renamed to Lookinglass as it veered further away from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel. The original name intent was man brought back to life by scientists playing God but it shared little else with Frankenstein so the first name change came about. Lookinglass is the name of the company that the scientists work for in the new TV series and that is how that name was selected. Finally before airing the name was switched to Second Chance to reflect the story being told, Jimmy Pritchard getting a second chance and showing what he does with it.

So far @AlienView has given some positive feedback about it so now I'm curious about the show. Before it aired it sounded a bit like the old 1999 show Now and Again about a man given a second chance at life through a brain transfer into the body of a younger & fitter engineered body. Since I haven't seen the show yet I don't know through what means the character in Second Chance is reborn so I'll have to watch it for curiosities sake if nothing else.

I had a chance to watch the first episode and, honestly, it was better than I was expecting.

Even though the sheriff's character was forced out of his job he is still a bit of a likable person just trying to do the right thing (totally the wrong way it turns out which led to his ouster as sheriff). I kind of wish that the Tim DeKay was either playing a different character or at least had a different profession. As the sheriff's son his character will likely be frequently shown but his character being an FBI agent had me thinking of his FBI agent role on White Collar the entire time he was onscreen. The two corporate backers, Otto & Mary, are flawed in their own ways which leads their reasons for the Lookinglass program more believable.

Seeing the resurrection of Pritchard it was easy to see why the original title of the series was Frankenstein. The name change though made sense because "Second Chance" applies to more than just Pritchard's character.

One thing that did stick out was Pritchard getting a pretty cool car to drive around while solving crimes. As the series credits were rolling I couldn't help but think... "A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist. ... a young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the powerless, in a world of criminals who operate above the law."
